Checklist

Urn in hand luggage: what to watch

If a relative carries the urn, these points help. We are happy to prepare the document folder.

Request a document folder

  1. 01

    Ask the airline first

Not every airline allows urns in the cabin. Ideally get it confirmed in writing.

  2. 02

    X-ray-friendly urn

Wood, cardboard or plastic. Metal or stone can prevent the security check.

  3. 03

    Keep it sealed

The urn must not be opened at security – the seal stays intact.

  4. 04

    Original documents

Death certificate, cremation certificate, translation and apostille if needed.

  5. 05

    Check import rules

Some countries require a permit or a customs declaration.

  6. 06

    Allow extra time

Arrive at the airport earlier for the security check.

Process

How an urn transfer works

  1. First call

We clarify the destination and whether the urn travels as freight or with relatives. You then receive a fixed written price.

  2. Cremation & documents

We coordinate with the crematorium, obtain the death and cremation certificates and – depending on the country – have them apostilled and translated.

  3. Shipping or handover

The sealed urn travels as tracked air freight – or we hand it over to your relatives before departure with a complete document folder.

  4. Arrival

After customs clearance the urn is handed over to your family, a cemetery or a local funeral home. We keep you informed until then.

Good to know

Mandatory cemetery burial in Germany

Mandatory cemetery burial in Germany (Friedhofszwang): Urns must generally be buried in a cemetery and may not usually be kept privately. Only a few German states, such as Bremen, allow exceptions. Crematoria and authorities therefore often ask for proof of where the urn will be buried abroad.

Whether relatives may carry the urn on the plane themselves is something we clarify in advance with the authorities and the airline.

Cost

How much does an urn transfer cost?

FAQ

Questions about urn transport

Your question is not listed? Call us or message us on WhatsApp.

Can I carry the urn on the plane myself?

Many airlines allow it, usually in hand luggage. The urn must be sealed and X-ray-transparent, and the death and cremation certificates must travel with it. Whether the urn is released to relatives in Germany depends on the German state because of mandatory cemetery burial. We clarify both in advance.

What is the Friedhofszwang?

In Germany, urns must generally be buried in a cemetery. For a burial abroad, proof of where the urn will be buried is therefore often required.

How long does an urn transfer take?

It mainly depends on when the cremation takes place and how quickly the documents are issued. An urn usually travels much faster than a coffin. After the first call we give you a realistic timeline.

Can an urn be sent by post?

Some countries allow it, many do not. We choose a tracked route and check the destination's import rules in advance.

Which documents does the destination country require?

Usually the death and cremation certificates, often with apostille and certified translation. We know the requirements for CIS countries and prepare everything.

Do you also bring urns from abroad to Germany?

Yes. We organise the local documents, the urn certificate from the German mission and the handover in Germany through to the burial.

Is the consultation free?

Yes. Advice, checking the requirements and the written quote are free and without obligation.

Which languages do you speak?

English, German, Russian and Ukrainian.

Are you a funeral home?

We handle international urn transfers for funeral homes, with a fixed contact and, if you wish, under your name towards the family.
